When the weather turns moody, it’s not an ideal vacation—especially on a small island. But don’t lose your good spirit! Grab your rain poncho and explore the island—you’ll still make great memories even in the rain.

Here are some ideas for things to do in Koh Phi Phi when it rains.

1. Go Swimming

Unless it’s storming or the sea is rough, you can still enjoy a dip in the ocean or even go snorkeling in one of the island’s sheltered bays. You’re getting wet anyway—why not embrace it? The sea stays around 29°C and is often warmer than the air on a rainy day. Just be sure to avoid swimming during storms, strong winds, or heavy rain.

2. Hike to the Viewpoint

A light rain can actually make the hike to the Phi Phi Viewpoint more enjoyable—it cools the air and keeps the crowds away. Just wear a raincoat and shoes with good grip. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with fresh air and a stunning view—misty and moody, but still magical.

3. Treat Yourself to a Massage

Rainy days are perfect for self-care. Unwind with a relaxing oil massage and let the sound of the rain add to the atmosphere. We recommend Anita Massage for a top-notch experience that will leave you feeling refreshed and recharged.

4. Walk to Long Beach

Take a peaceful stroll from Tonsai Town along the coast to Long Beach and Loh Moo Dee Beach. The walk is scenic, and you’ll pass a few cozy spots where you can stop for lunch or drinks. If the waves are calm, take a quick swim—but don’t attempt to swim out to Shark Point when the sea is rough, as strong currents can be dangerous.

5. Taste Local Food

Rainy days are the perfect excuse to go on a food adventure! Cozy up in one of the island’s many restaurants and discover something new.

  • Start your morning at Cafe 9.89 or Patchery Bakery  —a great breakfast spots with everything from croissants and bagels to açai bowls and toasties.

  • For lunch, head to Ae Fish BBQ for delicious local Thai dishes and what many say is the best papaya salad on the island. Or wander through the local market for fresh, authentic bites.

  • In the evening, enjoy a refined dining experience at Acqua Restaurant, where the ambiance is elevated and the cocktails are crafted to perfection.

6. Get Fit at the Gym

If you’re the type who prefers to stay active—even on vacation—hit the gym! There are two main gyms on the island:

  • A spacious fitness center at Banyan Villa, right in the heart of Tonsai.

  • A smaller, more intimate gym above Earth Tone café at Phi Phi Princess Resort.

Both offer day passes. Just remember to bring your sports shoes!

7. Go Scuba Diving

Yes, you can still dive in the rain! As long as the sea isn’t too rough, scuba diving trips run year-round, even during wet weather. The rain doesn’t affect the underwater world, but sea conditions and visibility can vary—so check with a local dive shop first.

Top-rated dive operators include:

  • Adventure Club

  • PKT

  • Princess Divers

They’ll help you choose the right dive site for the day’s conditions.

8. Cocktails & Bar Games

When the skies turn grey, lift your mood with a tropical cocktail or two. Tonsai’s lively bars stay open rain or shine, offering a fun escape with sports screenings, pool tables, and a chance to meet fellow travelers.

Great spots to check out:

  • Irish Bar – for a laid-back pub vibe.

  • Dojo Bar – a favorite for games and good drinks.

  • Relax Bar – for chill beats and cozy shelter from the rain.

9. Explore Local Cafés

Take a break from the rain and treat yourself to a cozy café experience. Whether you’re after a strong espresso or a mango-sticky rice dessert, Phi Phi’s café scene won’t disappoint.

Try these favorites:

  • Qoori Qoori Café – for sweet Japanese-inspired treats.

  • 23° Roasters – a hidden gem for serious coffee lovers.

  • Mango Garden – famous for mango pancakes and bright island vibes.

10. Take a Thai Cooking Class

Why not learn something new while waiting out the rain? Join a Thai cooking class and discover the secrets behind classic dishes like pad thai, green curry, or mango sticky rice.

Check availability at:

  • CHAO Koh Restaurant in central Phi Phi.

  • Zeavola Resort in Laem Tong Beach (perfect if you’re staying up north).

11. Get a Tattoo

Rainy days = perfect time to finally get that tattoo you’ve been thinking about. Phi Phi has plenty of tattoo studios offering everything from fine-line designs to traditional bamboo tattoos.

🔍 Pro Tip: Check online reviews, ask around, and always prioritize hygiene and artist reputation.

🚫 What Not TO DO during monsoon storms

  • Avoid boat trips, especially on longtail boats. The sea can change quickly and become dangerous in stormy conditions. It’s not worth the risk.

  • Don’t take a speedboat transfer to or from the island during bad weather. Instead, opt for the larger ferry, which is more stable and much safer in rough sea conditions.

  • Don’t let the rain ruin your day. Koh Phi Phi is still magical—even in the wet weather. Relax, explore, and enjoy the slower pace. 🌧️💙
