15 Books you must read while traveling in Thailand

You are currently viewing 15 Books you must read while traveling in Thailand

If you love reading as much as I do, you know how important it is to bring a great book on your holidays. Before my first trip to Thailand back in 2005, I spent a lot of time researching the best books to bring along. Little did I know that just a few years later, I would end up living in Thailand—and reading all of them!

Most of these books are perfect reads while traveling around Thailand, helping you dive deeper into Thai culture, history, and the local way of life. Take The Beach for example—reading it while relaxing in Koh Phi Phi, just miles from where the movie was filmed, made the story come alive in a way that I couldn’t have imagined back home in Europe.

If you enjoy movies, many of these books have been adapted into films, offering you a double dose of Thai-inspired storytelling. So, without further ado, here is my list of the top 10 must-read books to enrich your Thailand travel experience.

1. THE BEACH by Alex Garland

1996
NOVEL, FICTION, ADVENTURE

I can’t start this list without The Beach. Made famous by the 2000 film with Leonardo DiCaprio, it’s become a backpacker’s bible—especially here in Koh Phi Phi, where the movie was filmed at Maya Bay. The book follows Richard, a British backpacker discovering the contrast between Western life and the freedom of Southeast Asia. It’s a must-read for anyone visiting Thailand.
