Discover Krabi Mainland: Ao Nang, Krabi Town & Railay
Krabi is one of Thailand’s 76 provinces, located in the stunning southern part of the country. While the province is mostly mainland, it also includes some of the most famous islands like Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi. The provincial capital is Krabi Town, and the entire region is a hotspot for travelers, from backpackers to holidaymakers.
Since Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi are extensive topics on their own, this post will focus on the mainland areas of Krabi — specifically Ao Nang, Krabi Town, and Railay.
A quick tip: I don’t recommend one-day speedboat trips to Koh Phi Phi or Koh Lanta from Krabi. These trips tend to be hectic, dropping you on the islands right at the busiest midday hours. To truly enjoy the magic of these islands, spending a few nights there is the way to go.

If you’re planning to stay for a few days, Ao Nang is my top recommendation. It’s centrally located and perfectly positioned for exploring the surrounding areas. Plus, Ao Nang often offers very good deals on accommodation, from budget guesthouses to mid-range hotels.
If you prefer more of a true island vibe, Railay might be more your style. However, keep in mind there are no roads connecting Railay to the mainland — you’ll need to rely on taxi boats for transfers in and out of the peninsula.
While Ao Nang’s beaches aren’t quite as stunning as those at Railay or nearby Tonsai, it’s much easier to get around from Ao Nang, whether by motorbike or public transport. That makes it a practical base for your Krabi adventures.
Krabi province is one of the most picturesque regions in Thailand, offering plenty to see and do — from stunning beaches and dramatic limestone cliffs to vibrant markets and local culture.
WHERE TO STAY IN KRABI?
TOP REVIEWED HOTELS IN KRABI TOWN, AONANG AND RAILAY

1. Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea)
Located just a 15-minute drive from Krabi Town on the way to the airport, the Tiger Cave Temple is a must-visit spiritual and natural landmark. Perched atop a mountain, the temple offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
The climb to the summit involves ascending 1,237 steps and typically takes around one hour. It’s a challenging trek, so be sure to bring plenty of water, wear comfortable shoes, and pace yourself. If you plan to watch the sunset from the top, don’t forget to bring a torch or have your phone fully charged for lighting the way back down in the dark.
Beware of the many monkeys that roam around the temple grounds and stairway — they can be quite bold, especially if you have food, so keep your belongings secure.
A few practical tips: Women should wear long pants and cover their shoulders out of respect for the temple’s Buddhist customs, as visitors in inappropriate clothing won’t be allowed inside.
Best of all — there is no entry fee to visit this amazing site.

2. Hot Spring and Emerald Pool (Klong Thom & Sa Morakot)
A visit to the Emerald Pool is a must when staying in Krabi. Located about an hour’s drive from Aonang and just 30 minutes from Krabi Town, this natural attraction is famous for its crystal-clear turquoise water nestled in the jungle.
To beat the crowds—mostly locals and Chinese tourists—try to arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon for a more peaceful experience.
Start your day by soaking in the hot springs nearby, where volcanic water is believed to have health benefits. After warming up, take the scenic 500-meter walk through lush jungle and mangroves to the Emerald Pool to cool off in its refreshing waters.
From there, it’s another 15-minute walk to the stunning Blue Lagoon, a hidden gem you definitely shouldn’t miss.
Entry to the park costs 200 THB per person. Avoid weekends if you prefer a quieter visit, as this spot gets especially busy with locals.

3. Visit Railay & Tonsai
If you’re searching for stunning beaches and dramatic limestone cliffs, Railay Beach and Tonsai Beach should be at the top of your list. You can reach them by longtail boat from Aonang Beach, which costs around 100 THB per person and takes just 15 minutes. Boats operate during the day, but note that the last boat back is usually around 6:00 PM, just before sunset.
For a peaceful escape, head to Tonsai Beach, known for its laid-back vibe and budget-friendly accommodations. It’s popular with climbers, backpackers, and anyone seeking a quiet spot to relax.
On the Railay side, don’t miss Phra Nang Beach, widely considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand. It’s famous for its white sand, turquoise water, and the quirky Phra Nang Cave Shrine, filled with wooden carvings in the shape of male anatomy—left as offerings for fertility.
Activities in Railay include:
Rock climbing – some of the best in Thailand
Kayaking – explore the coastline and nearby caves
Hiking to the viewpoint and lagoon – a rewarding but challenging trek with steep, muddy paths and ropes for support. Wear proper shoes and avoid it after rain.
You can also stay overnight in Railay, but keep in mind that accommodation tends to be more expensive than in Aonang or Krabi Town.

4. Rock Climbing in Railay & Tonsai
Railay and Tonsai are world-famous rock climbing destinations, attracting climbers from all over the globe. The area’s dramatic limestone cliffs and scenic coastal setting make it a dream location for both experienced climbers and absolute beginners.
There are plenty of reputable climbing schools and agencies offering guided climbs and lessons. Whether you’re trying climbing for the first time or looking to improve your skills, there are packages to suit everyone.
Half-day course (great for beginners):

💸 Around 1,200 THB per person
Full-day course (more intensive):

All equipment is usually included in the price, and instructors are well-trained and familiar with the area.

5. Khao Ngon Nak Viewpoint (Dragon’s Crest)
If you love hiking and jaw-dropping views, Khao Ngon Nak Viewpoint—also known as Dragon’s Crest—is a must-do. It’s one of the most rewarding treks in southern Thailand.
🗺️ The Trail
The well-marked trail winds through lush jungle with informative signs about the local flora and fauna. It takes around 2 to 2.5 hours to reach the top, with a nice first viewpoint about halfway for a quick rest and some photos.
🥵 The Climb
The final stretch is more challenging, with steeper inclines and some rocky sections, so come prepared. Pack:
Plenty of water
Snacks
Sunscreen
Mosquito repellent
Proper hiking shoes

🛶 Join a Tour or Go Private?
You can:

Hire a private longtail boat for a more flexible and personal experience.
💡 Tip: Hiring a private boat is highly recommended. Local captains know the area well and can take you to the best spots based on the weather and tides. Plus, you can set your own schedule and avoid the busiest times.
🎟️ National Park Fees
Most islands are part of a national marine park, so you’ll pay an entrance fee of 200–300 THB per person, valid for the entire day.

7. White Temple – Wat Kaew Korawaram
Located right in the heart of Krabi Town, Wat Kaew Korawaram—often referred to as the White Temple—is one of the most peaceful and beautiful sights in the area. Unlike some of the more crowded tourist attractions, this temple offers a serene and quiet atmosphere, perfect if you’re seeking a moment of reflection or solitude.
🛕 What to Expect
The temple sits atop a small hill and features bright white architecture with elegant stairways lined by mythical serpent statues. It’s not as grand as other temples in Thailand, but it has a unique charm and is often overlooked by tourists.
Just behind the temple, you’ll find Krabi Contemporary Art Museum, a small but interesting spot to check out if you’re into local art and culture.
👚 Dress Code
As with all temples in Thailand, remember to dress modestly—shoulders and knees covered—and remove your shoes before entering.
📸 Pro Tip: Visit just before sunset for beautiful soft lighting and a peaceful atmosphere.

Though smaller than the famous markets of Bangkok, Krabi’s night market offers a warm, authentic atmosphere with plenty of friendly locals and tourists mingling under the evening sky.

The market kicks off after sunset, around 6 PM, and runs until late. It’s a perfect way to spend an evening after a day of exploring.

Momiji Onsen and Spa – My personal favorite, blending traditional Thai spa treatments with Japanese onsen-style relaxation for a unique and tranquil experience

10. Cooking Classes
Even if you’re not a keen cook, I highly recommend trying one of the cooking classes available in Krabi. My personal favorite is Thai Charm Cooking School , located right in Krabi town.
The classes are super fun, hands-on, and informative. Plus, the best part — you get to eat all the delicious meals you prepare!
The price is 1200 THB per person, which includes hotel pickup. Thai Charm Cooking School is a family-run business, and the owners, Heng and You, will make sure you have an amazing experience learning to cook your favorite authentic Thai dishes.

Just a short boat ride from Krabi Town, Koh Klang Village offers a fascinating glimpse into traditional fishing village life, untouched by tourism. It’s a peaceful place where time seems to have stood still, giving you an authentic experience of local culture.
You can catch a boat from Krabi Chao Fah Pier — the ride takes about 5 minutes and costs just 20 THB per person. Keep in mind that most of the local population in Krabi is Muslim, so please dress respectfully when visiting the village.

12. Kayaking in Thalane Bay & Klong Root
Kayaking is one of the best ways to explore Krabi’s hidden natural beauty. Paddle through serene waterways, discover secluded coves, mysterious sea caves, and spectacular lagoons.
Thalane Bay, located just north of Krabi, features stunning canyons, dense mangrove forests, and dramatic limestone formations. Keep your eyes peeled for the diverse wildlife and colorful birds that inhabit the area. Kayaking trips can be booked easily throughout Krabi Town.
Another great spot is Klong Root, where you can rent kayaks locally. We drove there by motorbike and rented kayaks from Krabi Thana Kayaking, which offers reliable service and quality equipment.
