Koh Samui
your ultimate travel guide
Koh Samui is one of Thailand’s most popular and diverse islands, located in the Gulf of Thailand. Known for its stunning natural beauty, the island features everything from lush jungle-covered mountains to endless palm-fringed beaches. Whether you’re looking for a holiday packed with adventure and activities or just want to unwind on a quiet stretch of sand, Koh Samui has something for everyone. From vibrant nightlife and world-class dining to tranquil temples and waterfalls, this island paradise never disappoints.

🛬 How to Get to Koh Samui
- BY PLANE
✈️ 1. Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) → Koh Samui (USM)
Direct Flight
The fastest and most convenient way to reach Koh Samui is by flying directly from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK). The flight takes just over an hour and lands at the charming, open-air Koh Samui Airport (USM), which is privately owned by Bangkok Airways.
Because of the airport’s private ownership, prices for direct flights are typically higher than other domestic routes in Thailand. Expect to pay around 3,500 THB (~115 USD) one-way per person.
✅ Best for: Convenience and time-saving
❌ Downside: More expensive than other options
✈️+🚌+⛴ 2. Bangkok Don Muang (DMK) → Surat Thani (URT) → Koh Samui
Budget Route: Plane + Bus + Ferry
If you’re traveling on a budget, flying from Don Muang Airport (DMK) in Bangkok to Surat Thani Airport (URT) is a great alternative. Several budget airlines such as Thai Lion Air, Nok Air, and AirAsia operate this route.
Once you arrive at Surat Thani Airport, you can purchase a combined transfer (joint ticket) that includes a bus to Donsak Pier and a ferry to Koh Samui.
If you’re arriving at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) but flying out of Don Muang (DMK), you can use a free airport shuttle (with proof of flight ticket). It departs 2–3 times per hour and is located at Exit #3 on the 2nd floor of the arrivals hall.
💡 Tip: If you plan to transfer between Bangkok’s two airports and want to reach Koh Samui on the same day, make sure your flight lands at Suvarnabhumi in the early morning.
If your flight lands after 9:00 AM, you likely won’t catch the last ferry to the island — and will need to stay overnight in Bangkok or Surat Thani.
✅ Best for: Budget-conscious travelers
❌ Downside: More time-consuming and involves multiple transfers
- TRAIN + FERRY BOAT
🚆+⛴ 3. Bangkok → Surat Thani by Train + Ferry to Koh Samui
Budget-Friendly Option
If you’re not in a rush and want to experience a classic Thailand journey, taking the night train from Bangkok to Surat Thani is a memorable and budget-friendly option.
The train departs from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal (Bangkok’s main station) at around 5:00 PM and arrives at Surat Thani Railway Station early the next morning, after approximately 12 hours of travel.
From the train station, it’s about a 45-minute drive by bus or minivan to Donsak Pier, where you’ll catch the ferry to Koh Samui.
Expect around 1–2 hours of waiting time between arriving at the train station and catching your ferry, depending on the connection.
✅ Best for: Budget travel and a scenic, local experience
❌ Downside: Long travel time and early morning transfers
Tip: You can book a combined train + bus + ferry ticket through agencies or online, which simplifies the trip and often includes all transfers.
- BUS + FERRY BOAT
🚌+⛴ 4. Bangkok → Koh Samui by Bus + Ferry
Affordable & Convenient Combo
If you’re traveling on a budget, the bus + ferry combo is one of the most cost-effective ways to reach Koh Samui from Bangkok.
Buses depart from:
– Sai Tai Mai (Southern Bus Terminal)
– Khao San Road (via private travel agencies)
You can book your ticket online or through any local travel agency, which will typically offer a combined ticket that includes both the bus and the ferry to Koh Samui.
The total journey time can take 10–13 hours, depending on traffic and ferry schedules. Most buses are overnight, allowing you to save on accommodation and wake up closer to paradise.
✅ Best for: Budget-conscious travelers and backpackers
❌ Downside: Long hours and limited comfort
Tip: Always double-check whether your bus drops you directly at Donsak Pier or requires a transfer to get there.
Getting Around Koh Samui After Arrival
When you arrive at Nathon Ferry Port, the main gateway to Koh Samui, you won’t have to worry about transportation to your hotel.
The three main ferry operators serving the route are:
Lomprayah
Seatran
Songserm (Andaman Wave Master)
At the port, you’ll find plenty of options to get to your accommodation:
Taxis – convenient and ready to take you anywhere on the island
Shared minivans – a budget-friendly option for reaching most resorts and hotels
Whether you’re staying near the bustling Chaweng Beach or in a quiet spot like Maenam, transport options are readily available.

What area to stay at in koh samui?
The vast majority of tourists choose Chaweng or Lamai as their base on the island. These areas boast the longest beaches on Koh Samui and the most developed infrastructure. You’ll find plenty of restaurants, cafes, shops, and vibrant beach bars to enjoy.
If you prefer a quieter, less commercial vibe, consider staying in areas like Maenam, Choeng Mon, or Ban Tai, which offer a more relaxed atmosphere while still providing good accommodation options.
Exploring the Island: Rent a Scooter or Car
To truly experience Koh Samui’s variety of beaches and hidden spots, renting a car or motorbike is essential. While taxis and the local Songthaew bus service are available, relying on them can limit your freedom and increase costs.
If you don’t drive or prefer not to, staying near Lamai or Chaweng Beach is convenient since most restaurants, bars, and shops are within walking distance.
Driving around Koh Samui is fairly straightforward. The main road circles the island, making it easy to explore beaches, venture inland to the jungle and waterfalls, or discover secret bays.
I highly recommend hopping on a scooter and setting off on your own — it’s the best way to uncover empty beaches, serene palm groves, and authentic Thai fishing villages.
Beaches & accommodation
Chaweng Beach
Chaweng Beach is the longest and most popular tourist area on Koh Samui. The northern part of the beach is conveniently close to the airport, making it an ideal spot for travelers. Here, you’ll find a wide range of accommodation options—from luxury resorts and trendy hotels to budget-friendly hostels.
Chaweng is also the island’s entertainment and nightlife hub. During the day, join the lively pool parties at Ark Bar, located on the north side of the beach. As the sun sets, catch an amazing fire show right on the beach or head into town for a night of dancing and fun at the famous Green Mango Club.
The town and main road around Chaweng are packed with restaurants, bars, and street stalls, so you’ll never run out of things to do or places to explore.

Thong Krut
Thong Krut is a peaceful fishing bay located on the southern coast of Koh Samui. While the beach itself is not ideal for swimming due to its muddy and stony shore, it offers stunning panoramic views of the nearby Koh Matsum and Koh Tan islands.
This area is known more for its authentic local vibe than for beach lounging. However, it’s the perfect spot to book a boat trip to explore the surrounding islands — popular for snorkeling, sightseeing, and enjoying less touristy beaches.

Taling Ngam Beach
Taling Ngam Beach is a serene stretch of coastline located on the southwestern side of Koh Samui, offering breathtaking views of the Ang Thong National Marine Park and some of the island’s most beautiful sunsets.

Far from the crowds, Taling Ngam is a true off-the-beaten-path destination — tranquil, untouched, and ideal for those seeking relaxation. The nearest town, Nathon, is about a 20-minute drive away.
While you’re exploring the area, don’t miss the sunset — head to the cozy I-Talay Beach Bar for a cocktail with a view that’s hard to beat.

Known for its calm, shallow waters and soft sand, this beach is ideal for families with kids or travelers looking to relax, unwind, and read a book in peace. The beach features a very gradual slope, which means tides can change the landscape noticeably throughout the day.
The area has a laid-back atmosphere, with a handful of cozy bungalows, local beach bars, and one of the island’s iconic venues — the Nikki Beach Club Samui famous for its chic vibe and lively events. Just a short stroll away, don’t miss Think & Retro Cafe,, a colorful beach bar made from upcycled materials, offering delicious Thai food, cocktails, and incredible sunset views.

Stretching for about one kilometer, this peaceful beach offers a sense of seclusion and tranquility that’s increasingly rare on the island.
Ban Tai is ideal for those seeking calm waters, soft sand, and a quiet escape. It’s a favorite among locals and long-term expats who appreciate its relaxed vibe. While amenities are limited compared to more developed areas, you’ll still find a few charming beachfront resorts and cozy cafés where you can enjoy a coconut or a Thai meal with your toes in the sand.
